One week from now at Lord’s, pads will be strapped on, gloves donned and battle will commence in another summer-long saga of County Championship cricket.

Technically, that should read ‘recommence’ – after all, the season’s first contest will be played between the same two teams, Middlesex and Gloucestershire, who brought down the curtain on the 2025 campaign six months ago.

The Seaxes, who triumphed by an innings and 67 runs on that occasion, will want – and need – to hit the ground running. But how might they line up for the first match of the new season?

Although he missed a chunk of the early Championship rounds last season because of paternity leave, there’s little doubt that Sam Robson will be the senior member of the duo who begin any Middlesex innings.
