Wantage Road, Northamptonshire, marks Middlesex’s first road trip of the County Championship season on Friday.

Successive home games brought a win over Gloucestershire which raised expectations, followed by defeat to Worcestershire in three days which served to douse those heady thoughts in cold water.

The latter game drew comment from skipper Leus du Plooy that his top six had failed to turn up, while the same bowling attack has featured in both matches so far.

So whether in a search for inspiration or driven by the necessity of rotation will new head coach Peter Fulton stick or twist.
