With the halfway point of last season approaching, it was hard to visualise any route into Middlesex’s red-ball side for Joe Cracknell.
Regularly employed as a powerplay hitter in limited-overs formats, Cracknell had featured only three times in County Championship cricket since his debut in 2021.
Those all came towards the end of the Seaxes’ most recent stint in Division One and were borne from necessity, with the departure of overseas batter Pieter Malan leaving a dearth of top three options.
With a fairly settled top six last summer – although his friend and North Middlesex club colleague Luke Hollman managed to gatecrash it with some success, including a maiden century against Kent – it seemed Cracknell would have to settle for a diet of second XI cricket.
