Middlesex opener Nathan Fernandes claimed he couldn’t allow a bang in the face to deny him a rare chance to shine in yesterday’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup.
The 22-year-old left-hander made a match-winning 112 – his maiden century in white-ball cricket as Middlesex beat Essex by 41 runs at Radlett.
The Goa-born batter’s effort was all the more remarkable given it was his first outing at this level in any format since appearing in last year’s quarter-final loss to Hampshire in this competition, so the pressure was on.
But his day could have played out very differently.
