Angus Fraser wore the mantle of Middlesex’s seam spearhead with distinction for several years – as did Tim Murtagh. And in more recent years, so has Toby Roland-Jones.

About to begin his 17th season with the Seaxes, Roland-Jones has amassed more than 800 wickets across all formats and remains one of the domestic game’s ultra-reliable opening bowlers.

And yet – he is now 38 and the Middle must soon start pencilling in someone younger to take over, in due course, as the long-term leader of their pace attack.

That could be a more experienced bowler like Tom Helm or Henry Brookes, but the good news is that arguably the county’s most promising crop of youthful quicks for some years are pushing their way to the fore:
