Of all the things that could happen to Middlesex against Northamptonshire this week ,Zafar Gohar becoming the latest player to precipitate the injury substitute’s rule certainly wasn’t one of them.
The former Pakistan Test spinner limped out of the action shortly after top-scoring with 83 in Middlesex’s first innings against the Steelbacks on day 2 at Wantage Road.
On a pitch where both sides would have batted first and which is expected to offer turn, certainly on the final day if not before, losing the slow left-arm bowler’s services is a body blow.
However, in professional sport, perhaps more than anywhere else, one player’s misery is another’s opportunity, meaning it is time for others to move from backstage into the limelight.
