Max Holden inherited the mantle of Middlesex captain at the 11th hour for the opening day of their County Championship fixture with title-chasing Durham at Chester-le-Street yesterday.
The move came after the ECB doubled down on their stance that Leus du Plooy was no longer eligible to represent the tenants of Lord’s as a domestic player following his declared intention to make himself available for selection to the South African Test side.
We’ll discuss that spat between county and governing body shortly, but first we must consider what Holden’s sudden elevation means for both Middlesex and the 28-year-old left-hander himself.
