Ben Geddes’ elevation to open the batting at Old Trafford might have been unexpected, but it ultimately proved decisive in sealing Middlesex’s first County Championship victory there for 30 years.
After losing three wickets in eight balls on day three, the Seaxes’ prospects suddenly looked less certain at 64-4, still more than 50 runs short of the finish line in a low-scoring, bowler-friendly game.
But Geddes – who moved up from five to open alongside Sam Robson in the wake of Josh de Caires’ omission – rose to the challenge with verve and enthusiasm, taking on Lancashire’s seamers to drive Middlesex home with an unbeaten 73 from 70 balls.
