Leus du Plooy predicts day three of Middlesex’s County Championship Division Two encounter with Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford will be ‘Huge’ – and it’s hard to argue against that.
When play begins at 11am – Manchester weather permitting – Lancashire will start 77 runs ahead with seven second innings wickets standing. It may only be May 10 but the day feels ‘Huge’ not just in the context of the game but of the season.
One win in the first four games has left Middlesex fifth, 22 behind leaders Durham and 11 shy of their Red Rose hosts. With no batting bonus points secured and the game well advanced, it’s looks like a case of 19 points or three and if the latter scenario unfolds Middlesex will be 27 points adrift of Lancashire with more than a third of the red-ball season played.
