Tom Helm concedes Middlesex face a ‘massive’ day ahead as their match with Kent draws to a close at Merchant Taylors’ School.

Skipper Leus du Plooy and all-rounder Ryan Higgins head to the crease in a couple of hours’ time to resume the run chase, standing at 186-4 needing 356 to win.

The stakes could not really be higher. Trailing the men from the Garden of England by 18 points – or 21 now that bonus points have been added to the tallies, fail to reach the target and Middlesex will be 37 adrift, more than two wins with only five matches of the season left to play.

To make matters worse, Northamptonshire, currently third, look set for a resounding win over Lancashire, a victory which would also take them two wins clear of Middlesex should they lose in Moor Park.
