LUKE Hollman admitted to possessing an ‘over my dead body’ mentality after leading Middlesex to their first List-A final for 36 years in yesterday’s thrilling Metro Bank One-Day Cup semi-final victory over Durham.
Hollman wrote himself into Middlesex folklore after his unbeaten 83 rescued a game which had seemed lost with the hosts 145-7 in pursuit of 255 to win.
Middlesex sides of recent times would have melted away meekly given such a scenario, but they have found a new resolve in this competition and all-rounder Hollman in many ways stands as the poster boy of such resilience.
Starved of red-ball opportunities this season, Hollman, who’d earlier taken 3-53 ball in hand, stepped forward on the scorched earth of Radlett, more reminiscent of a gladiatorial arena than a rural club cricket ground, to be Middlesex’s equivalent of ‘I am Maximus,’ if you will.
