Peter Fulton says leading Middlesex is a ‘necessary progression’ for him but not a gamble.

The former New Zealand test star, nicknamed ‘Two-metre Peter, due to his 6ft 6in frame, called time on six years as head coach of Canterbury last month, shortly before the province won their second Plunket Shield title. There were two Ford Trophy (white ball) successes as well during his stint at the Hagley Oval where Fulton also spent his entire career as a top-order batter.

The 47-year-old has traded all that for a spell in charge of the tenants of Lord’s, a team with well publicised off-field financial troubles, currently competing in the second tier of the English county game and due to begin their campaign at home to Gloucestershire tomorrow (Friday).

Yet Fulton doesn’t view it as taking a punt, but instead a chance to prove himself somewhere other than his home-town bubble.
