Middlesex skipper Leus du Plooy was happier heralding the achievements of his predecessor rather than his own following day two of their County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Lord’s.
Du Plooy turned his overnight 98 not out into a mammoth 182, meaning he’s scored 455 runs against the men from Bristol in his last two games at the Home of Cricket, as Middlesex reached 445-9 declared.
However, reflecting on the day’s events afterwards his thoughts alighted on the feats of Toby Roland-Jones, the man he inherited the captaincy mantle from midway through last season. ‘Ro-Jo’s' opening salvo of 3-14, during which he rearranged the opposition’s furniture on each occasion reduced Gloucestershire to 26-3, leaving du Plooy full of admiration.
“Gee, Toby is just relentless isn’t he,” he said “I just love the fact I’ve got to plead with him to get the ball out of his hand.
