Middlesex may not have to wait another 10 years for their next silverware according to their elder statesman Toby Roland-Jones.
It’s 10 years to the day since the veteran seamer’s hat-trick won the men of Lord’s their 13th County Championship title, so Sunday’s thrilling victory over Leicestershire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup ended a decade of on-field struggles and off-field strife.
Roland-Jones, now 38 has built a reputation over the years as a man with a penchant for understatement, and amid the elation in the aftermath of success there was the usual level, measured tone.
Yet amongst it all there was a clear sense this long-awaited triumph should be seen as a stop over in a layby as part of a greater journey for a squad littered with youngsters who can only get better.
