Middlesex returned to County Championship action in mid-August, having closed out their previous red-ball phase with the frustration of a narrow defeat to Kent.

It proved to be a case of déjà vu for the Seaxes, going down by an almost identical margin in the return game at Merchant Taylors’ School – a result which effectively closed the door on hopes of forcing the way into the promotion battle.

They did finish the campaign respectably, with just one further loss against the division’s runaway winners Durham and posting home victories against Lancashire and promotion hopefuls Northamptonshire.
