Next up, we jump into June for the brief return to red-ball cricket that provided Middlesex with a variety of fillings for their T20 sandwich.

With Lord’s now booked out for most of the remainder of the summer and the height of exam season rendering Merchant Taylors’ School unavailable, the Seaxes faced back-to-back away fixtures in the Championship.

Just as they had struggled for consistency in the opening block of four-day games, Middlesex endured contrasting fortunes at Worcester and Canterbury, triumphing by 141 runs in the first of those to avenge their defeat to the Pears at Lord’s.

They should probably have backed that up against Kent after having the better of the first three days – but a fourth-innings collapse cost them dearly and arguably proved to be a key turning point in the tussle for promotion.
